How To Choose The Best Watch for Breath Holding Activities

No matter what underwater hobby you are interested in, there should be a watch to help you enjoy the underwater world on one breath and some that can help with safety too.

Specifications and Features of Apnea and Breath Hold Computers

Modes, displays, alerts, alarms, etc, there is a lot to a dive computer and freedive watch, but what should you be looking out for? Below we'll look in to some of the basic features and advanced features of watches for your hobby.

Alarms and Alert Types

The most important features on a dive watch for an apneist are without a doubt, alarms. When descending, you can't be keeping an eye on your watch the whole time, so having an alarm will help a lot. They come in different forms and different alert types.

There are dive depth alarms which you set at specific depths, this is the most common and watches let you choose between 1 and as many as you like. So you could choose to set an alarm at 12, when you know you'll roughly be neutrally buoyant. This first alarm will help remind you to stop finning and to relax in to the dive. The second alarm could be to help with equalisation at depth, for such things as mouth fill, or an alam just before you reach your depth. A final and third alarm could be at the depth you have programmed in, just to make sure that it makes you aware that you are at your max depth for that dive.

There are other types of dive alarms, such as heart rate alarms, maximum dive time, minimum surface recovery time and dive depth intervals which will allow you to set an alarm every 10m or whatever increment you like.

The most important thing within an alarm system is that you notice it goes off. That is why dive watches come with different alert types, which you can search for on the compare spearfishing and freedive watch page. They are audible, visual and physical and common alert types are alarm beeps and noises. Auto-backlight illumination is a visual, as well as a glowing LED and finally the physical vibration alerts.

Dive Watch Depths

Before you purchase a watch, if you are serious and competing or wish to improve upon your depths, make sure you get a watch which can go where you go. A few watches we have added can go only as deep as 80m, 260feet. Although that sounds deep now, within a year or two you may be able to achieve these depths with serious commitment and training. Watches tend to last the diver years, so look in to something that you can also grow in to.

Usability And Interface

An important factor when using a watch, is that of it's user interface. How easy is it to set up when in the water, how easy it is to use with gloves on and even download dive logs from? These are just a few questions you should be asking yourself when looking for a new free dive computer.

Types of Dive Watches

Freediving Watches

We have categorised freedive watches for training and competition on our compare freediving watch tool, check that out. Not all the watches we have listed are pure freediving watches though, the majority are scuba and have freedive modes on them. There are some though which are solely for apnea use and you will find they have more features for the freediving built in.

Are the dive logs clear and readable and can you actually get them from the watch on to a computer? Most come with separate USB leads which mount on to the watch so that you can download you dives and use third party software to watch your past dives.

Is the watch clear enough to use and see as well. Luckily most dive watches have a slightly bigger face than a regular wrist watch, which means that you get bigger fonts and clearer screens. Keep this in mind when thinking about a new free dive watch and also question how many features it is. A watch you may be looking at comes with more features than others, but you might want a super simple interfact and recording data so that you can see current depth or dive time at a glance and without having to take time to do this. This can be important on deep spearing dives where you are waiting about and are using the watch as a safey net.

Spearfishing Watches

For safety alarms, such as dive time and surface times, you'll want to be checking out features that keep your hobby simple, but also help you enjoy your time in the water by focusing on the important things, such as dive times and surface times. Most spearfishermen spend hours a day in the water, which could literally mean hundreds of dives. It is vastly more important than the recreational freediver that your recovery time is long enough and that your dive times are also not too long.

Snorkeling Watches

If you are more in to snorkeling and interested in getting a diving watch for surface diving and adventure snorkeling, you will have plenty of options to choose from.

Scuba Diving Watches

Some of the watches above are also scuba diving watches, which mean you can use them for freediving and scuba diving, if you prefer both underwater activity types.

Cheap Freediving Watch

Cheap freediving watches do exist, but just don't expect as many features that you would get with more depth and competition orientated watches. If you're after a cheap freediving watch, something that can get you by and show you current depth and dive times, just simple features, you have a few options. Head on over to the watch discovery tool and you can sort them all by Price RRP.

If you are buying new you have a handful of options for cheap watches between the $100 and $200 range. Although this isn't as cheap as some sports or GPS watches that you can get for other sports, we don't think it's too expensive either for what you are getting.

You could always go the used and second hand route and see what offerings there are on ebay, craiglist and facebook marketplace but you might have to be more patient to get one in your price range.
